What is Trafficking?

Although it is impossible to know exact numbers of victims, we do know that modern slavery has been on the increase. Many victims, including children, may be found working in agriculture, in the sex industry, and in places like nail bars, car washes, and cannabis farms.

Many victims may have been trafficked from overseas but there are also local victims who have been tricked with the promise of paid work or accommodation.

Child trafficking and modern slavery are forms of child abuse. Child trafficking also includes:

  • sexual exploitation
  • benefit fraud
  • forced marriage
  • domestic slavery like cleaning, cooking and childcare
  • forced labour in factories or agriculture
  • committing crimes, like begging, theft, working on cannabis farms or moving drugs.
