Understanding and responding to AI-generated child sexual abuse material

The rapid evolution of Artificial Intelligence (AI) brings numerous benefits, but also poses significant risks, particularly concerning the creation and sharing of child sexual abuse material (CSAM), also referred to as AI-CSAM

In collaboration with the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), CEOP (education from the national crime agency) has just launched new guidance for all professionals working with children and young people on the threat of AI–CSAM.

This essential guide for professionals who work with children and young people has been developed in response to the rapid increase in the number of reports received by the IWF in 2024 and findings from a 2024 CEOP Education survey which highlighted that:

  • 26% of education professionals were not aware that AI-CSAM is illegal; and
  • 53% stated that guidance for professionals was the most urgently needed resource

As well as answering frequently asked questions about AI-CSAM, the guidance provides essential information on identifying and responding to incidents involving AI-CSAM.
