Welcome to Training

Our Safeguarding Children Partnership for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly (OSCP) offers a range of learning, development and training opportunities including face to face training, e-learning and conferences.

Coming Soon!

Over the Summer we have been working with colleagues on a refreshed and updated training offer. We were hoping to have these ready from September but unfortunately we have experienced some delays.

From November we will have a new 1 day course Multi-Agency Child Protection and Safeguarding. This will replace the previous Working Together Course. There will be 2 of these courses running in different parts of Cornwall every month; most of these will be in person sessions but there will be online sessions in January 2026 and July 2026. These courses are intended for people with safeguarding responsibilities who are new to the role or new to Cornwall. We will also be offering a half day refresher session every month for those of you who need to update your training.

Don’t forget that any of the OSCP multi-agency courses act as your annual refresher as they deepen or broaden your understanding. In addition there will also be a monthly online masterclass which will offer a more in-depth look at a specific issue. The first of these will take place in November and will look at cultural competence and safeguarding. Other sessions planned will look at a range of topics including preparing for and attending safeguarding meetings, developing professional curiosity, safeguarding babies and very young children and recording, language and information sharing.

Just before half term we will have the first of our new Neglect training. This 1 day course replaces the previous Responding to Adolescent Neglect and Responding to the Neglect of 0-11 year olds courses. The new course offers an opportunity to explore the issues relating to the neglect of children. There will be 10 of these sessions over the course of a year; most of these will be in person but there will be online sessions in November 2025, March and July 2026.  In addition there will be monthly deeper dive sessions which will look in greater depth at key issues relating to Neglect; these will include the neglect of babies and very young children, neglect in large families, intragenerational neglect and the intersectionality between neglect and domestic abuse.

Cancellation Policy

Due to the high number of last minute cancellations and people who book training courses but do not attend we will be introducing a £75 cancellation fee from 1st November 2025. This will be charged for cancellations that take place less than 2 days before the date of the training and for people who do not attend. If you are unable to attend a course you are welcome to nominate someone else to attend in your place or to change to an alternative date. We are keen to make sure that places on courses are available to colleagues when they are needed and hope that this change will help us to do this.

More information about these opportunities can be found using the links on the left. Please be aware that Our Safeguarding Children Partnership is not responsible for the content or security of external links.

The OSCP Training Strategy and underpinning ethos form a most important focus within the multi-agency partnership. The knowledge, understanding and skills of staff in child safeguarding is critical and is developed through a true ‘learning culture’.

We are often asked if the training offered by OSCP is 'Level 3'. The levels referred to in the Training Strategy relate specifically to those described in the Safeguarding Children and Young People: Roles and Competencies for Healthcare Staff Intercollegiate Framework. For colleagues working in other settings such as schools, colleges or social care levels are no longer used. However the training offered is described as lntercollegiate Framework Level 3. In the information about each course we try to identify the roles or settings for which the training would be most relevant.

If your professional role requires you to have Level 3 or equivalent training, we recommend that you undertake the Multi-Agency Child Protection and Safeguarding course. If you are a DSL or deputy DSL in an education or early years setting you will also need to attend  the  Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)1-day training offered by Cornwall Councils Services for Schools or an equivalent. . After this when you need to update your training you could attend either the half day Multi-Agency Child Protection and Safeguarding Refresher course or any of our other courses to broaden your understanding of safeguarding.

The training strategy is currently being updated and promotes the availability of up-to-date learning opportunities, delivered in a stimulating and thought-provoking way by skilled practitioners. Supported by the work of the OSCP Learning and Reviews Group, the programme is constantly reviewed, developed and updated in line with learning gained from national and local reviews.

Safeguarding Induction Information is available to be shared with staff and volunteers. This updated information replaces the previous 'Level 1 Safeguarding Leaflet'
