Deaths of Arthur Labinjo-Hughes and Star Hobson

I am sure many of you have read about the tragic deaths of six-year old Arthur Labinjo-Hughes and 16-month old Star Hobson.  Arthur died in Solihull, West Midlands in June 2020.  His step-mother has been convicted of his murder and his father of his manslaughter.  Star died in Keighley, West Yorkshire in September 2020.  Her mother’s partner has been convicted of her murder and her mother of causing or allowing her death.

As a safeguarding children partnership we offer our thoughts and condolences to the families and friends of both Arthur and Star.  I can’t even start to imagine what they have been through over the past two years.

As the local safeguarding children partnership we are keen to understand fully what happened to Arthur and Star and await the release of the safeguarding review reports that are due to be produced.  Once we have those reports we will carefully review the findings, work out if we need to change any of our practices and, if so, make that happen.

Thankfully, situations where children such as Arthur and Star are murdered by those entrusted with their care, are incredibly rare but they are always uppermost in our minds.  We are aware that evil things can happen to children, regardless of their age, and we do what we can to make sure the amazing people who safeguard our children have the time, space and support to do their job properly.

As a partnership we continuously review how we operate to make sure we are doing our absolute best to safeguard and protect children.  We check on the day to day work undertaken by staff across all our different organisations and, although we cannot guarantee that mistakes will never be made, we are confident the safeguarding work undertaken in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly is effective and safe.

Child safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility so if you have any concerns over the safety or welfare of any child please report it to Cornwall Council, the Council for the Isles of Scilly or the Devon and Cornwall Police. Contact information here
