The theme of this year’s conference is Domestic abuse and older people, inspired by learning from recent Safeguarding Adult Reviews and Domestic Homicide Reviews.

Guest speaker Dr Hannah Bows will start the day after an introduction from our independent chair Fiona Field.

Then a bespoke production by the Miracle Theatre Company of our specially commissioned video highlighting domestic abuse in older adults and depicting events in the life of ‘Lily’, a fictional character but drawn from case studies and experts by experience. A panel of specialist practitioners drawn from our partners including Health services, Police, Adult Social Care, Housing, Domestic Abuse  will be on hand to respond to the video, promote discussion and provide clarity and detail on what ‘should’ happen, from legal, local expected practice and working in partnership perspectives. This will be followed by an update of local responses including projects and services currently operating.

After a lunch break, we will invite Ryan Hart to speak and share his family’s story of coercive control and domestic homicide. Following on Anna MacGregor will be discussing domestic abuse – impact on older people and the legal considerations which will lead into a local perspective on legal provision, powers and challenges with case examples of when and how these are implemented; supported by representatives from the police, housing, adult social care and domestic abuse co-ordinators. There will be an opportunity to ask questions.

Full details of all the day’s events, biographies for speakers and the days agenda with times will be available on the website on October 15th.
