Safeguarding and Medication Guidance

The Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Safeguarding Adults Board's Safeguarding and Medication Guidance helps health and social care providers determine when medication incidents should be managed through internal governance processes and when they should be referred through adult safeguarding procedures.

The guidance promotes a consistent, proportionate and learning-focused approach to medication errors, balancing safeguarding responsibilities with quality assurance and regulatory requirements. It sets out clear criteria for when safeguarding concerns must be raised, including cases involving significant harm, deliberate acts, unlawful restraint, repeated incidents, or concerns affecting multiple adults.

The document also outlines providers' responsibilities for investigating incidents, recording outcomes, identifying learning, and implementing improvements, while providing practical examples and a quick reference guide to support decision-making.

Overall, the guidance aims to protect adults from harm, support safe medication practices, and encourage continuous learning and service improvement.
