Susan - what her life has taught us
Join us to explore early learning from the case of 'Susan', a case study based on learning from a local Safeguarding Adult Review (SAR) referral. Susan's learning disability and health conditions meant that she was reliant on one family carer to meet her needs.
The session will explore the roles of professionals in contact with the family and how working with other professionals, professional curiosity and the application of the Mental Capacity Act (MCA, 2005) in practice would have contributed to better outcomes related to Susan's personal autonomy, rights, and her access to a life outside of the home for a better quality of life.
The session includes reflections about best practice where there appears to be conflict between professionals’ views of best interest for the person, and another interested party such as care giver or family. We will also explore what to do and how to escalate where the offer of care and support provision is being declined by care givers.
