Your Rights

The United Nations says that every child with a disability has the right to:

  • Live a happy and full life
  • Be treated with dignity
  • Be as independent as possible
  • Be part of the community

Governments should help children with disabilities and their families.

Your Safety

Many young people have some kind of learning, sensory or physical disability. Unfortunately, we know that if you have any kind of disability you are more likely to experience bullying or abuse of some kind.  This is never okay.

Some children and young people need support to move around and carry out day to day tasks including washing, showering or getting dressed. This means that they might have different adults helping them with this.

If something does not feel right or you know someone is hurting you or taking advantage of you, tell someone you trust or contact someone for help

Support with communication

Some children and young people need support from friends or trusted adults to make sure they are able to communicate their views and feelings.

  • We worked with CAAP to develop some Top Tips for professionals when they are communicating with you
  • This leaflet is full of more feedback from children and young people in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly about feeling safe and unsafe, you are welcome to share it as widely as you like
  • SENDitForward is an opportunity for young people with special educational needs and disabilities to have their voice heard. It is a place where they can share their opinions, thoughts and experiences to help make positive changes in Cornwall

Active8, is a charity that helps young people with physical disabilities. They made this video for us, it shows some of the barriers faced by wheelchair users in terms of access and attitudes, for example

  1. When footpaths are blocked
  2. When people talk to your helper instead of you
  3. When there is no suitable road crossing
  4. Lack of disability awareness
