Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly Safeguarding Children Partnership

Safer Cornwall Have Your Say Survey

Safer Cornwall have launched a survey to help them understand what issues are having the most impact on community safety and we work together with them to effectively address those issues and to deliver what is needed to keep the people of Cornwall safe – on our streets and in our workplaces, schools and homes.

Safer Cornwall’s vision is that Cornwall’s communities feel safe and are safe for everyone who lives, works and visits here.

Your views are important to us - they will help us to provide the right services for everybody.

This survey should take 10-15 minutes to complete

Children and Young People have told us how they feel  on the streets / in public places

The majority of groups consistently express concerns about safety when out and about.

Large groups of rowdy people were a worry, especially if there were concerns about alcohol / drug use at the same time.

C&YP asked

  • Could safe spaces in the community be made available for all?
  • Could we have training and support to give us the ability to challenge discrimination or respond to things that affect our friends?
  • Younger children raised the issue of road safety and dangerous drivers.  They asked for more input in schools.  Many groups raised a need for better streetlighting and worried about walking home alone.
  • Access to a phone and transport were very important in terms of this issue.

We shared this feedback has been shared with Safer Cornwall, Cornwall Council's Localism Team and Devon and Cornwall Police.

The localism team are working on how they ensure that C&YP have a say in what is being planned across all 12 community area partnerships and the community intelligence team.

Safer Cornwall are extending their Safer Streets Campaign from Falmouth and Penryn to Truro and Penzance.  They are focussing on social change, support and increased security.  We talked to Safer Cornwall about providing some bystander training specifically for groups of C&YP.  They are working with Devon & Cornwall Police on the Violence Against Women & Girls and Anti-Social Behaviours project.  Work is being done on staff training and safety charters for night time venues.  Work is also focussing on increased CCTV, street lighting and road safety.

Devon & Cornwall Police provide lots of information for C&YP while out and about, and have relaunched their StreetSafe App (available for both iPhone and Android devices. The app allows anyone to anonymously report public places where they have felt unsafe for whatever reason, such as being followed or verbally abused).  They have also created Project NightEye, a policing approach that focusses on behaviour such as men making unwanted contact towards women, attempting to isolate women from their friends on a night out or making lewd or sexual comments.

We worked with the Safer Stronger Consortium as they develop their serious violence prevention programme, they engaged with YP to produce a framework and action plan that applies to all services across C&IOS.
