OSCP Annual Conference- The Key Principles of Children's Rights

Our Safeguarding Children Partnership for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly annual conference focuses on the four principles of children’s rights. The Conference will take place online using Microsoft Teams on Wednesday 27th January 2021 from 9.30am-2pm

These four principles underpin our approach to children and their rights. The implementation of these principles is how we respect children as equals and ensure that they are protected.

  1. Non-Discrimination

All children should enjoy their rights and should never be subjected to any discrimination.

  1. Best interests of the child/Children

In all actions concerning children whether undertaken by public or private social welfare institution, courts of law, administrative authorities or legislative bodies, the best interest of the child shall be a primary consideration.

  1. The right to survival and development

State parties shall ensure to the maximum extent possible the survival and development of the child.

  1. The views of the child

States parties shall assure to the child who is capable of forming his or her own views the rights to express those views freely in all matters affecting the child, the view of the child being given due weight in accordance with the age and maturity of the child.

We are delighted to welcome Professor Laura Lundy as our keynote speaker. Laura is Co-Director of the Centre for Children’s Rights and a Professor in the School of Social Sciences, Education and Social Work at Queen’s University, Belfast. She is co-Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Children’s Rights.  Her expertise is in children’s right to participate in decision-making and education rights.

The programme is still being finalised and will be shared as soon as all our speakers are confirmed. As usual we’re planning an interesting and varied day that we hope will be engaging for the very wide range of organisations working with children in Cornwall.
