Multi- Agency Neglect Deep Dive 8/1/26: Neglect in larger families

Course Overview

Neglect in Larger Families is a focused 2-hour online training course designed for professionals working with children, young people, and families.

Delivered live via Microsoft Teams, the session explores how neglect can present within larger family settings, the additional pressures these families may face, and how practitioners can confidently identify, assess and respond to concerns in line with statutory safeguarding guidance and local practice in Cornwall.

Course Description

Neglect is the most common form of child abuse, yet it can be difficult to recognise, particularly in larger families where needs may be competing, cumulative harm may develop over time and parental capacity can be stretched.

This interactive online session supports professionals to deepen their understanding of neglect in the context of larger families, moving beyond assumptions to evidence-based analysis and child-centred practice.

The course will explore risk factors, indicators and patterns of chronic and episodic neglect, including the impact of poverty, parental stress, mental health, substance misuse and social isolation.

Participants will consider how neglect may affect siblings differently, the importance of seeing and hearing each child and how professional curiosity and respectful challenge support effective safeguarding.

Grounded in current UK legislation, Working Together to Safeguard Children, and local multi-agency expectations, the training will support practitioners to recognise when support is sufficient and when safeguarding action is required.

The session is suitable for professionals across education, health, social care, early help, youth services and the voluntary sector working with children and families in Cornwall.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
