Multi- Agency Neglect Deep Dive 7/5/26: Child Sexual Abuse and Neglect
Child Sexual Abuse and Neglect
Course Overview
Child Sexual Abuse and Neglect is a focused 2-hour online training course designed for professionals working with children, young people, and families. Delivered live via Microsoft Teams, the session explores how sexual abuse and neglect can co-exist, how to recognise indicators of harm, and how to respond effectively in line with statutory safeguarding guidance and local practice in Cornwall.
Course Description
Child sexual abuse and neglect are often interconnected, with neglect increasing children’s vulnerability to sexual harm, including exploitation. This interactive session supports professionals to recognise the signs, patterns, and contexts in which these forms of abuse occur, and to respond with confidence and clarity.
The course explores how child sexual exploitation (CSE), as a form of child sexual abuse, can develop in the context of unmet needs, poor supervision and reduced protective factors. Participants will examine key indicators of sexual abuse and neglect, including behavioural, physical, and contextual signs, as well as the role of peer, online and community environments.
The session also considers barriers to identification, including stigma, shame, disguised compliance, and professional uncertainty, supporting practitioners to apply professional curiosity and maintain a clear focus on the child’s lived experience.
Grounded in statutory guidance and Cornwall’s safeguarding arrangements, the course reinforces the importance of timely intervention, effective multi-agency working, and confident, evidence-based decision-making to safeguard children.
