Level 3 Neglect Across the Life Course
From October 2022 we will replacing this course and Neglect Across the Life Course with 2 new Neglect courses. The new courses are now available for booking and look at the Neglect of Adolescents and Neglect in 0-11 year olds.
Course Description
This one-day course will enable multi-agency staff to have an overview of how childhood neglect affects children throughout their lives. The course will explore how professionals assess and intervene with families where neglect has been identified pre- and post-birth and when working with families where neglect is transgenerational. Participants will examine the impact of neglect on adolescents and children with disabilities. This training can act as the update or refresher required for Level 3 compliance with the requirements of statutory or professional organisations.
Intended Audience
The training will meet the continuing developmental needs of multi-agency professionals working with children, young people and/or their parents/carers and who could potentially contribute to assessing, planning, intervening and evaluating the needs of a child or young person and parenting capacity where there are safeguarding/child protection concerns. This may include staff who complete section 47 enquiries, GPs, mental health staff (adult and CAMHS), child psychologists, child psychotherapists, adult learning disability staff, designated person (including child minders/ foster carers), police, health professionals working in substance misuse services, youth offending team staff, sexual health staff, school nurses, social workers, health visitors, all children’s nurses, midwives, child psychologists, obstetricians, all paediatricians, Designated/Safeguarding leads within a school, college, early years and childcare settings, organisation or agency and those who work with complex cases co-ordinate assessments of children in need.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the day, participants will be able to:
- Name the key elements of Cornwall’s neglect strategy and their roles and responsibilities within this;
- Recognise the signs and symptoms that may indicate that children, children with disabilities, adolescents, are suffering from or are likely to suffer neglect, including identification of dental neglect;
- Recognise and intervene where neglect is impacting on an unborn baby;
- Describe how the brain develops pre-birth, after birth and recognise the importance of early support for children who experience neglect and abuse;
- Recognise that the effects of neglect can be mistaken for other conditions;
- Listen to the child’s voice to inform assessment and intervention with families;
- Describe the different ways in which children may experience neglect and the lifetime impact on their physical, emotional and social development;
- Identify families where transgenerational issues of neglect are present and the importance of timely multi-agency assessment and intervention to safeguard children and break the cycle of abuse;
- Describe the ways in which neglect can manifest itself in families - passive, chaotic and active, and the parenting strategies that may be observed;
- Explain the impact of personal and professional values and beliefs when working with issues of neglect;
- Take action to provide services and support for children and their families where there are concerns of neglect;
- Establish mechanisms through supervision and peer support to embed learning into practice.
