CIoS SAB Workshop - Domestic Abuse Black and Minority Communities

Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Safeguarding Adult Board are raising awareness of domestic abuse to support professional capabilities and responses to domestic abuse across our area. Following on from the 'Domestic abuse and older people' conference in November 2021, we are continuing to raise awareness about the support and approaches that work best for different individuals and communities.

Barnardo’s as part of the Safer Futures service has designed a training workshop to focus on the context of Domestic Abuse in Black and Minority Communities on 27th March 2023; 1-4pm

The training is aimed at Practitioners who have a good base line knowledge of Domestic Abuse who are either experienced Practitioners with Health and Social Care and /or have already attended some Domestic Abuse training. The Training covers the context of Domestic Abuse in Black and Minority Communities. The workshop focuses on three areas, Forced Marriage, So Called Honour based abuse and Female genital mutilation and a good practice guide. The training also covers the barriers those from Black and Minorities experience when disclosing Domestic Abuse.

Please note: Attendees are required to commit time to reviewing the preperation material in advance of the session - see details below.

Prior to attending the training workshop it will support your learning if you are able to undertake some pre training study, the exercise should take you approximately an hour. Could you please watch the following film on youtube- Banaz: An Honor Killing (True Crime Documentary) - Real Stories?

Sensitivity warning: The film contains some distressing scenes/language you need to be aware of  for your own well-being or others around you.  As with all training Safer Futures delivers you will have access to a debrief post training if required.

Whilst watching the film could you make brief notes on the missed opportunities where Professionals could have intervened but didn’t and if you observe any unconscious bias or even institutional racism which also may have created a barrier to protecting Banaz.  During our training session we will discuss your observations in small  break out groups and within the main training discussions.
